Visitors to RIVAA Gallery are invited into the quietly intense world of Dan Nistor, a Romanian-born painter whose work focuses not on labels or grand declarations but on creating pure aesthetic pleasure. Nistor’s exhibition features more than 80 works, each framed and finished by his own hand, offering a rare opportunity to encounter an artist who measures progress not by titles, but by the steady honing of vision and craft.
Trained at the Bucharest National University of Arts, where he earned his Master of Fine Arts, Dan moved to New York in 1996 to continue his studio practice. Over the years, he taught drawing, imaging, and fashion design at Parsons The New School for Design, the Art Institute of New York, and other institutions. His years teaching fashion, in particular, influenced his sensitivity to form, texture, and the expressive possibilities of surface.
For Nistor, however, teaching and affiliation have never been the ultimate markers of artistic achievement. “It’s a big deal to say you’re an artist,” he reflects. “You keep working, knowing that you make progress – somehow you exhaust the bad way, and you’re left to the good way, if you have enough strength.” One piece in the show even dates back to a school assignment from his early years – can you guess which one he painted at age 25?
Nistor’s paintings seek not to provoke analysis, but to offer a direct experience of beauty. His goal, he says, is simple: “for people to enjoy my artwork – not to make them scratch their heads or to find it interesting, but to look at it and feel a specific type of pleasure, an aesthetic pleasure.” He welcomes visitors to engage with the work freely, even encouraging those who feel moved to touch the paintings. He is not precious about them and wants them to be enjoyed.
Technically, Nistor approaches his work as a valuist rather than a colorist, focusing on contrasts of light and dark rather than relying heavily on pure color to create impact. He loves to manipulate paint, pastels, charcoal, and digital elements, embracing the exploratory nature of the process. His brushstrokes, often guided by the nature of the canvas, work to capture fleeting emotional states. Each painting is the result of a moment lived intensely in the studio, shaped by light, music, and the quiet battle against artistic habit.
For Dan Nistor, the work speaks for itself – quietly, rigorously, and without needing the scaffolding of titles or affiliation. As he puts it, each painting is addressed to “somebody still unknown who would be the ideal viewer – someone who will enjoy the work in a permanent way.”
