The Roosevelt Island Saturday Farmers Market at Motorgate Plaza is closed tomorrow, December 27. The Farmers Market will be back open to start the New Year on Saturday January 3.

Greetings Haki Compost Collective volunteers and food scrap droppers,
Yes, we will be open this Saturday, December 27th from 9 am to 2 pm at the Motorgate area. If the weather is not dry look for the green bins which may be tucked under the Helix for cover. If a Haki volunteer has stepped away please add a click to the counter when you drop your food scraps (one click per apartment). Veggie, fruit, egg shells, coffee grinds all welcome – no oil, dairy, meat, fish or plastic bags, stickers or ties please.
2025 Review
As of December 6, 2025 we have collected 24,943 pounds of residential scraps for the community compost program with partners Big Reuse and RIOC. Thanks to you we will definitely exceed 25,000 pounds (over 12 tons) diverted from landfill once the last three weeks of December are tabulated. Those scraps are processed into nutrient-rich compost to amend city soils, trees, flowers and even resident houseplants.
New Yorkers have options to send their scraps for biogas collection, using the building’s brown bins or sidewalk orange bins, so thanks for being part of the community compost soil amendment program. All these options are better than trashing food scraps into landfill.
Since Haki Compost Collective was formed in 2020 over 105 volunteers have gone through the short Haki Compost Collective orientation. Though most have moved off island we are thrilled that 10 new volunteers were welcomed to Haki in 2025, We need more volunteers so please consider donating an hour of your time on a Saturday and reach out to us at Hakicompost@gmail.com to express your interest.
