As a part of UNBANNED: Exploring Censorship in Books, Art, & Media, join Elizabeth Larison, Director of the Arts & Culture Advocacy Program at the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC), for a talk on recent incidents of art censorship in the U.S. Audiences will learn more about how to define censorship in the U.S. context, identify its mechanisms, and understand factors that lead to self-censorship.

On May 16, 2024 the FDR Four Freedoms Park hosted a panel discussion on controversial books that have been banned through history and up to the present day.

The discussion was moderated by Katrina vanden Heuvel. Panelist included:

  • Christine Emaran of the National Coalition Against Censorship,
  • Nick Buron Queens Public Library Chief Librarian,
  • Amy Mikel Director of Customer Experience at the Brooklyn Public Library
  • and Megan Madison author of Our Skin: A First Conversation About Race .
