I recently walked into the TD Bank on First Avenue and 56th Street and was surprised to see a picture on the wall of Roosevelt Island, then known as Welfare Island, taken in 1935 from Sutton Place. Take a look.

According to Roosevelt Island Historical Society (RIHS) President Judy Berdy, the Welfare Island buildings shown in the picture from left to right are:

  • The Welfare Island Elevator Storehouse which included elevator access to the Queensboro Bridge

Ms Berdy asks you to send her any old photos you may have of Roosevelt Island:

  1. The Warden was the head of the Penitentiary. Mae West was a prisoner in the Workhouse farther north on the Island. It might have been the Warden of the
Workhouse who too Mae for a ride around the island.
