Despite freezing weather in NYC today feeling like minus 15 degrees, Roosevelt Island residents made their regular Saturday visit to the Haki Compost Food Scrap Drop Off Site and Farmers Market to buy their fresh fruits and vegetables. According to Haki volunteer Melissa Wade:
We’ve had almost 50 droppers and it’s not even noon yet. And we always tell people that we will always be here. Unless you hear that we’re not here, assume we’re here. We’ve been here in blizzards, in cold temperatures, hot temperatures, whatever, because people will drop off. We want to be here. So, always assume we’re here and always come out.
… There’s no bad weather, just bad clothing, so I am properly attired and feeling good.
What did you do today?
Here’s more on how NYC is handling today’s freezing temperatures.

I live on the Island and have repeatedly complained about the Street in front of IS 217. Today 2-21-26 I went to move my car and almost fell in the street trying to get in my car, thank goodness I was able to get my balance. If I fall Rioc is looking at a lawsuit. Senior and Handicapped people shouldn’t have to deal with these issues! When is this roadway going to be repaired?? You repaired part of Main Street why didn’t you repair by the school?
I took picture’s but couldn’t get it attached to this email.
Sidewalk in front of Roosevelt Island RP/IS 217 was a mess for a long time during the last snow event.
Doesn’t surprise me though, basic outdoor maintenance such as faulty lights taking forever or incapable of being repaired as well as watching staff struggle to clean the indoor quadrangle of snow and ice point to a lack of resources (or willingness ?) to get the basics done well.
School pride starts with a presentable, clean and professional presentation for students, staff, teachers and parents. Set a high standard for all !
