Roosevelt Island is fortunate to have many good, kind and community minded residents. Good Life On Roosevelt Island Association (GLORIA) President Andrea Jackson is one of those residents. On Tuesday, May 12, GLORIA hosted a free Prom and Graduate Dress Giveaway at Good Shepherd Plaza. I spoke with Ms Jackson at the event.
According to Ms Jackson:
I’m the president of Good Life for Roosevelt Island Association. Today we had a free prom dress and graduation giveaway. They’re all free prom dresses as you can see. They’re lovely. They’re in every shade of the rainbow.
We have had now 18 recipients of prom dresses as well as graduation dresses. We’re doing it as a give-back to the community to help some of the graduates pay the cost associated with the purchase of a prom dress.
We know that can go anywhere from $2 to $300. Today, they’re free. They’re brand new. They’re donated. Macy’s has donated some We have some coming from Manhattan, some from Queens and it’s just amazing. I think it’s wonderful.
We’re giving away tiaras and we gave away soft drinks, chocolates, something to make them feel really special about their day.
No girl should go without being able to feel special on her graduation and prom day. So, we thank the community for coming out and supporting us….
We will be out here again on Saturday. So come on out if you are a graduate whether it’s from middle school or high school or college. There’s a dress here for you…. We’ll be here from 8:00 a.m. till probably about 5:00 p.m.
We look forward to seeing you.
Let’s celebrate Good People with this song from Great Big Sea.
