NYC Ferry is proposing changes and additions to some ferry routes.

NYC Ferry reports:

For the first time since our launch eight years ago, we are conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the entire NYC Ferry network and are proposing major route changes. The proposal holistically addresses known system issues and improves rider experience within our budget constraints, aiming to:

• Give riders more places to go

• Speed up commutes

• Make more seats available

• Operate more efficiently

• Reduce subsidy per rider

Highlights of proposed changes

• Break the East River into two routes, allowing ridership to grow and make trips faster.

• Combine the Soundview and Rockaway routes, getting Rockaway route riders to Midtown and E 90th St and filling previously empty boats going toward The Bronx.

• Connect the St. George (Staten Island) route to Brooklyn and the rest of the system.

• Provide a one-seat ride to Midtown for the South Brooklyn route, opening a popular job center to Red Hook and Atlantic Ave residents and increasing frequency.

or increased Roosevelt Island frequency of service.

I asked Roosevelt Island residents today:

Any suggestions for improving Roosevelt Island ferry service?

Roosevelt Island residents answered:

More frequency and more routes.

and

If 30 or more of us complete this survey and asked for double frequency on Roosevelt Island, they would take note.

A possible solution for increasing frequency would be adding Roosevelt Island and Astoria to the Soundview/East 90th Street East River ferry route.
