Roosevelt Island photographer Alexandre Tolipan was among a group of onlookers walking on the Roosevelt Island waterfront promenade at about 7:40 this morning who spotted a body floating in the East River. Mr Tolipan shares this video of the NYPD trying to throw one of the newly installed Life Rings to the person in the water and the person’s eventual rescue by a NYPD Harbor Patrol boat.

According to a NYPD spokesperson, a 24 year old male jumped into the East River off of Roosevelt Island. He was rescued and brought out of the water by NYPD Harbor Patrol and taken to Cornell Hospital in stable condition. Not known at this time why the person jumped into the water.

  1. Those “Life Rings” are completely useless and should be trashed. I saw PSD throwing them earlier than the video. And from standing on the walkway, they made it about 3 feet past the rocks. Even here, going to the lighthouse and climbing down, he still didn’t bother throwing it. Even though the guy was floating really not that far away from shore.
