The NY Public Library Roosevelt Island branch manager Kate Fredericoni reports:

Dear Roosevelt Island Community,

School is wrapping up and the days are getting longer, which means two big things at the library: Pride Month celebrations and the official launch of Summer at the Library! From toddlers to seniors, we have designed a sunny season full of exciting programs, community activities, and specialized reading recommendations for ALL ages. There is truly something for everyone under our roof this summer.

Speaking of summer excitement, the FIFA World Cup is finally here! This ultimate international football competition has been held every four years since 1930, and you don’t have to watch the world’s biggest sporting event alone. Join library staff in the Community Room at the Roosevelt Island Library to view select matches and cheer on your favorite teams with fellow fans.

We will be streaming the following games live:

  • Monday, June 15 at 12:00 PM | Spain vs. Cabo Verde
  • Saturday, June 20 at 1:00 PM | Netherlands vs. Sweden
  • Monday, June 22 at 1:00 PM | Argentina vs. Austria
  • Monday, June 29 at 1:00 PM | Group C Winner vs. Group F 2nd Place

Put on your favorite jersey, bring your team spirit, and join us for some unforgettable tournament action. No registration required, and all ages are welcome!

I have attached the complete June Program Guide and a Printable Calendar. These documents include clickable links to each event’s page on the NYPL website for easy registration and sharing!

Holiday Closure: Please note that the library will be closed on Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Be sure to stop by earlier in the week to grab your books, movies, and activities for the holiday weekend!

Here are a few featured programs for the month ahead:

ADULT Programs

  • Monday, June 8: RIHS Lecture: The Killing Fields of East New York
    • Author Stacy Horn (also writer of “Damnation Island,” about 19th-century Blackwell’s Island) has chronicled how the subprime mortgage scandal of the 1970s and a long history of white-collar crime slowly destroyed the Brooklyn neighborhood of East New York. She will share her compelling investigative journalism in a conversation about the area’s fair housing, race, violence and misplaced city priorities.

TEEN Programs

  • Wednesday, June 3: Wednesday’s a Challenge
    • Wednesday’s usually a challenge, which is why we’re turning it into an opportunity to win prizes! Complete a logic puzzle or activity sheet for a prize.
  • Monday, June 22: Book to Film Club
    • Join us for an hour of fun, while we discuss and watch our book-to-film-of-the-month, We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. Copies available at the circulation desk.

CHILDREN’S Programs

  • Monday, June 1: The Story Box: Rachael Harrington
    • We are excited to welcome back storyteller Rachael Harrington! In the Story Box, young learners will dive imagination-first into a vibrant three-dimensional exploration of fairy tales. Rachael Harrington brings a tale to life through interactive tellings that include call-and-response, puppets and music. The fairy tales then become inspiration for an art making activity that will inspire creative retellings of the story at home.
  • Wednesday, June 17: Looney Louie’s Juggling Magic Show
    • Join us in person at the Roosevelt Island Library for a magical experience as we kick off Summer Reading! Looney Louie brings a very funny and interactive magic show with a little juggling to kick things off that is good old fashioned family fun! Not only does Looney Louie encourage loads of audience participation but kids are brought up as magical assistants several times during the performance!

How You Can Help

We would love your support in spreading the word! Please feel free to include the attached highlights in your newsletters or on community boards. Word-of-mouth is our greatest tool in keeping the Roosevelt Island community connected.

There is so much to explore this month, and we’re thrilled to share it with you. See you around the library!
