According to the RIHS:
Nelly Bly gained her reputation as a reporter when she exposed the horrible conditions of the asylum on Blackwells Island. Later in her career, she continued to cover issues of importance to women, including a seminal interview with Susan B. Anthony and major events in the suffrage campaign.
New York University Professor Brooke Kroeger, whose biography of Bly is recognized as the definitive account of the reporters life, will speak on Nellie Bly: From Blackwell’s Island to Well Beyond at a lecture presented by the Roosevelt Island Historical Society at the New York Public Library Branch on Roosevelt Island, on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.
The event is FREE and open to the public. It is the third in the Societys annual series of spring lectures, which is supported by funds provided by Amalgamated Bank, Roosevelt Island Operating Corporations I Public Purpose Fund and New York City Council Member Ben Kallos, with funding from the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development.
DIRECTIONS: Take the Tram at 59th Street and Second Avenue or the F train to Roosevelt Island. Take the red bus (no charge) or walk eight minutes north to 524 Main Street.
The Roosevelt Island Historical Society promotes awareness of the Islands unique story and pursues preservation of its landmarks and artifacts. For more information, please visit www.rihs.us.
