How did Roosevelt Island do cleaning up after Sunday’s winter storm that dropped approximately 10 inches of snow, sleet and ice on our streets and sidewalks?

According to Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) Assistant Vice President of Communications & Government Affairs Bryant Daniels:

The RIOC Winter Warriors are continuing to work hard to clear the snow left by the worst winter storm in the last five years. Credit to our Grounds, Transportation, and PSD crews for their outstanding efforts over the past 72 hours to clear Main Street—first of cars, then snow—which allowed us to quickly restore Red Bus service after a brief interruption yesterday. Our thanks as well to the island motorists who abided by our Main Street parking notice and moved their cars on time, ahead of the storm.

As of this afternoon, Red Bus service has returned to its normal schedule, and we will continue the work of ensuring our roads and sidewalks are safe for motorists and pedestrians alike. What’s more, we will also continue to monitor the forecast with the possibility for additional snow to arrive later in the week.

After walking around Roosevelt Island this morning and afternoon, I’d say that RIOC staff and the individual building workers did a very good job cleaning up and removing the snow from our streets and sidewalks.

There were some areas by the crosswalks and bus stops with a lot of slush and puddles remaining

but for the most part, a very good job. Except for the area near the Racquet Club which was not cleaned up at all. According to RIOC:

We’re working with the Racquet Club to address it. They’re undermanned and asked for help. Our team is working through bus stops and other high traffic areas but we’ll get to their sidewalk as soon as we can.

Here’s what the Roosevelt Island looked like this afternoon.

RIOC adds:

Dear Roosevelt Island Community:

As snow removal efforts continue, parking restrictions on Main Street are being extended through Wednesday, January 28, at 7:00 PM.

Residents currently parking in Motorgate with valid identification may continue to do so through Wednesday at 7:00 PM. Vehicles remaining after that time will be subject to the normal Motorgate day rate.

For those parking in Motorgate, please be mindful not to park in handicapped spaces or loading zones. Parking on the Motorgate roof is expected to be available after tomorrow morning.

Motorists with disabled placards may continue to park under the helix through Wednesday at 7:00 PM.

Thank you for your continued patience as we work to clear the island of snow.
