Happy 32nd Birthday to the Roosevelt Island Tramway. Later today, from 3 – 6 PM all are invited to celebrate with a piece of cake. RIOC is also inviting residents to be interviewed by a videographer and to tell your favorite tram story. You think anyone is going to say:
Hey, remember the time we were stuck up there overnight – what a hoot.
Probably not.RIOC has also released the latest version of the new Roosevelt Island Tram Cabin design. What do you think?

What’s not shown in the picture above is RIOC’s plan for a Roosevelt Island Tram Cabin Floor Spectacular. In an attempt to capture more of the thrill seeking tourist market, RIOC is taking a page out of the Sears Tower Skydeck and Grand Canyon Skywalk marketing handbook by designing a see through glass bottom floor for the Roosevelt Island Tram so that passengers can look directly down below their feet and see the Manhattan streets and East River as they soar high above on the Tram. Imagine that!

Now that would make a Great Story but that’s all it is. I’m just kidding about the glass bottom Tram Cabin Floor.Despite the Tram Birthday sign indicating that it is it’s 32nd Birthday, both Roosevelt Island 360 and Roosevelt Island Historical Society say it is birthday number 33:
… In 1976 the Tram made its first 4 1/2-minute trip across the East River. It was designed by Prentice & Chan and Ohlhausen and built by the Swiss company Vonroll…
Probably just an old banner being used.
