For the last several years, as soon as the warmer weather arrived, the entire Roosevelt Island Firefighters Field was taken over all day on weekends by groups of Volleyball Players who set up as many as ten to twelve nets making it nearly impossible for anyone else to use the field for “open play”.

No longer. On May 8, the Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) announced:

Dear Roosevelt Island Community,

Beginning this weekend, volleyball nets will no longer be allowed on Firefighters Field. This change is necessary due to the excessive wear and tear the nets and related activity have caused to the field, resulting in significant turf damage.

Please note that Firefighters Field will remain open for general play and recreation. We appreciate your cooperation as we work to preserve the field for all to enjoy.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

-Team RIOC

According to RIOC:

Firefighters Field is located across the street from 405 Main Street. Primary uses: Baseball, Softball, Soccer. Measurements: 303ft X 178ft. *Open play until further notice.

Last weekend, Roosevelt Island’s Firefighters Field was available for open play and recreation.

No more Volleyball Nets taking up the entire Firefighters Field.

  1. It was about time. They were effectively locusts. Descended on the island en masse. Chewed up the lawn. And then left.
