Roosevelt Island’s NYC Council Member Julie Menin Unanimously Elected As Speaker Today

Roosevelt Island’s NYC Council Member Julie Menin, who also represents the Upper East Side, was unanimously elected as NYC Council Speaker today.

Roosevelt Island Operating Corp (RIOC) President B.J. Ryan had this to say about Speaker Menin:

It’s an exciting day for Roosevelt Island. On behalf of RIOC and the entire community, I’d like to congratulate Council Member Julie Menin on becoming the seventh Speaker of the New York City Council. Speaker Menin has been a staunch advocate for Roosevelt Islanders and a tireless fighter for all New Yorkers. As we chart the course for the island’s future, I look forward to working with her, our community members, and other stakeholders to ensure Roosevelt Island remains a clean, serene, and safe community for years to come.

Ms Menin spoke about her policy priorities as the future Speaker during this conversation with Ben Max.

I spoke with Ms Menin last May about Roosevelt Island and other district wide issues including congestion pricing, NYC Sanctuary City policies and public safety issues.

Last June, Ms Menin spoke in support of a Roosevelt Island Tram boarding priority pass to be picked up on Roosevelt Island and arranged for a meeting of residents with Governor Hochul’s office to discuss the idea.

But no new information about the proposed plan since the meeting with the Governor’s office.

Ms Menin is now the second most powerful NYC elected official after Mayor Mamdani.
