The Roosevelt Island FDR Four Freedoms State Park is hosting a series of upcoming programs celebrating the freedom of expression.

Join us in May for UNBANNED: Exploring Censorship in Books, Art, & Media—a public program created in partnership with the National Coalition Against Censorship that addresses the urgent issue of banned and challenged works across the country.

On May 16, 2024 the FDR Four Freedoms Park hosted a panel discussion on controversial books that have been banned through history and up to the present day.

The discussion was moderated by Katrina vanden Heuvel. Panelist included:

  • Christine Emaran of the National Coalition Against Censorship,
  • Nick Buron Queens Public Library Chief Librarian,
  • Amy Mikel Director of Customer Experience at the Brooklyn Public Library
  • and Megan Madison author of Our Skin: A First Conversation About Race and Amy Mikel .

Also, coming up in September, FDR Four Freedoms State Park will showcase a new installation from Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei.
